The full story

Elon Musk, in 5 chapters.

  1. Ch 01

    Pretoria to Silicon Valley

Born in Pretoria, Elon Musk moved to Canada at 17 to dodge military service and reach what he believed was the technological frontier. He sold his first company, Zip2, for $307M at 28, then put almost all of it into the company that would become PayPal.

  2. Ch 02

    Three near-deaths in one year

In 2008 SpaceX had three rocket failures and was weeks from bankruptcy. Tesla was burning cash and unable to deliver the Roadster. Musk borrowed against his houses to cover payroll. SpaceX's fourth launch succeeded; NASA awarded the COTS contract days later; Daimler bought a Tesla stake. Three years of luck and engineering compressed into 90 days.

  3. Ch 03

    Reusing the rocket

The orthodoxy in aerospace was that orbital-class rockets could not be landed and reflown. SpaceX did it in 2015, then did it again, then made it routine. The cost per kilogram to orbit collapsed. The economics of the entire space industry rewrote themselves around one company's stubbornness.

  4. Ch 04

    The Tesla scale-up

The Model 3 launch nearly broke Tesla again — production hell, sleeping in the factory, lines on Sand Hill that the company would not survive. It did. By 2021 Tesla was the most valuable car company on earth, and EVs were no longer a question of if but of when every other manufacturer would follow.

  5. Ch 05

    X, xAI, and the rest

Whatever you think of the second half — Twitter, X, Neuralink, xAI, Boring Company — the first half is the clearest case study in modern engineering: pick problems most rational people consider impossible, then survive long enough to make them inevitable.
